As a way of streamlining and improving systems, for the past six months, FIT Uganda has been in the process of consolidating its health policy with particular focus on HIV/AIDS in the workplace. This activity has involved developing and implementing HIV and AIDS workplace policies, planning and budgeting for internal HIV programmes and addressing issues of vulnerability to HIV/AIDS for FIT employees.
The HIV/AIDS policy also encourages HIV and AIDS discussions at the FIT workplace, introducing HIV and AIDs information corners, and encouraging staff to go for Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT).
To officially launch the HIV/AIDS policy, and also as Corporate Social Responsibility, FIT Uganda organized a free HIV/AIDS Counseling and Testing exercise for its staff and the neighbouring community in partnership with Mengo Hospital on 19th February, 2010.
A total of 126 people braved the afternoon shower to undertake the testing exercise. Among the community were traders from Mengo and Nakulabye, bodaboda riders, students from Ndejje University Mengo Campus and Mengo Senior School, Eritrean refugees living in Senkatuka Zone, mechanics from the Nakulabye garages, traders from Nakulabye trading center and others.
The turn up was overwhelming that the officials from Mengo Hospital requested to stop the registration of new people as it was getting late. Those who missed out on the chance requested that FIT Uganda organizes a similar activity in future.
